You are near a plan limit and need the product-lane behavior: hold, keep running with extra credits or pay-per-task, fail at the cap, or upgrade. You will stay in units and vendor policy. This page names that ceiling behavior, accessed 2026-09-19.

A use-or-skip check for the plan ceiling.

This page vs the three meter reads

Tasks vs credits vs executions is the dictionary of the three words. This page does not reprint that dictionary. It is the ceiling.

Same job, three meters is one 5-step job counted as Zapier tasks, Make credits, and n8n executions at 50 / 500 / 5,000 runs. This page does not reprint that volume ladder.

How to meter automation is what to watch — usage, volume, credits — and what multiplies a job: loops, retries, and polls. This page does not reprint that watch list.

How AI steps change the meter is the AI / agent delta — model-tier tasks, token credits, activities, and gateway credits. This page does not reprint those rates.

This page is only the ceiling: hold, extra credits, fail, or upgrade. Units and vendor policy only. It does not invent a monthly dollar.

What each product does at the ceiling

Each vendor still meters a different thing, and each one treats the cap differently. Do not treat a Zapier hold as a Make schedule stop as an n8n Cloud fail. Dated quotes below are from primary vendor pages, accessed 2026-09-19.

Task hold

Zapier

If your plan does not include pay-per-task billing or if you have turned it off, when your plan reaches its task limit Zapier will hold any new Zap runs until your billing cycle resets.

With pay-per-task on, extra tasks bill separately until usage hits 3× the selected plan’s task limit, then remaining runs are held. Replay held runs after the cycle resets, you upgrade, or you turn pay-per-task on. This page does not invent a pay-per-task dollar rate — Zapier points that to Billing settings.

Credit stop

Make

If a module outputs the OperationsLimitExceededError, the scenario ends with an error. Because the OperationsLimitExceededError is a fatal error, Make immediately disables the scenario scheduling, regardless of the number of consecutive errors.

On paid plans, Make’s credits page says you can upgrade, buy extra credits, or turn on extra-credits auto-purchasing. When you use all of the credits in your subscription, Make automatically purchases 10,000 extra credits. Extra credits include a vendor-stated 25% additional cost versus credits in the plan. This page does not convert that into a monthly dollar.

Execution fail

n8n Cloud

Executions at the limit are not queued. They fail immediately with an error. There is no backlog: normal execution only resumes for new attempts once your plan resets or you upgrade.

Official Cloud FAQ: executions are not queued, paused, held, or retried automatically. Workflows stay on; each over-limit run fails before nodes run. Limits reset on the 1st of each calendar month. n8n’s Cloud FAQ also says Business is not currently available on Cloud.

Hold, extra credits, fail, or upgrade

A surprise invoice is often a ceiling surprise. One product holds the run. One stops scheduling. One fails the run and leaves the workflow on. This table stays on vendor policy. It does not invent an overage dollar.

ZapierPay-per-task off: new Zap runs are held at the plan task limit until the cycle resets, you upgrade, or you turn pay-per-task on.Pay-per-task is on by default for accounts that joined after January 2024 (paid plans). Held runs can be replayed after capacity returns. This page does not invent the per-task dollar.
MakeOperationsLimitExceededError is fatal. Make disables scenario scheduling immediately. Extra credits expire at the end of the current billing cycle on monthly plans.Vendor-stated 25% additional cost on extra credits versus credits in the plan. If card payment fails, extra-credits help says scenarios pause until the payment method is updated. This page does not invent a pack dollar.

Don’t turn a ceiling into a bill

A hold, a failed run, or an extra-credit toggle is not a monthly dollar. A /500 score is not a plan. This page does not invent an overage dollar or a converted list. It publishes no annual savings.

  • Stay in units until you can name the ceiling in the vendor’s meter — tasks held, credits stopped, or executions failed.
  • Then open Billing in the product you already run. Zapier points pay-per-task rates to Billing settings. Make extra credits sit on the subscription tab. n8n Cloud usage sits on Insights.
  • Verify the toggle you have on. Pay-per-task on or off, Make extra-credits auto-purchasing, and n8n Cloud vs self-host change the next step. This page does not invent that dollar.

Not tax or billing advice. See editorial standards.

FAQ

What happens when Zapier hits the task limit?

A Zapier task is a successful action step. With pay-per-task off, Zapier holds new Zap runs at 100% of the plan limit until the billing cycle resets, you upgrade, or you turn pay-per-task on. With pay-per-task on (paid plans; on by default if you joined after January 2024), extra tasks bill separately until usage hits 3× the selected plan’s task limit, then remaining runs are held. Held runs can be replayed after capacity returns. This page does not invent a pay-per-task dollar rate — Zapier points that to Billing settings. Accessed 2026-09-19.

What happens when Make runs out of credits?

Make raises OperationsLimitExceededError. That error is fatal: Make immediately disables scenario scheduling, regardless of the consecutive-error setting. Official fix: buy extra credits or upgrade. Paid plans can buy extra credits or turn on extra-credits auto-purchasing (automatic units of 10,000). Extra credits include a vendor-stated 25% additional cost versus credits in the plan and expire at the end of the current billing cycle on monthly plans. This page does not invent a pack dollar. Accessed 2026-09-19.

What happens when n8n Cloud hits the execution cap?

Official Cloud FAQ: executions at the limit are not queued, paused, held, or retried automatically. Each over-limit run fails immediately with “Execution limit reached. Consider upgrading your plan.” Workflows stay on; new attempts succeed only after the calendar-month reset, an upgrade, a one-time courtesy reset (Trial / Starter / Pro-1, once per customer), or added executions on Pro-2. Failed over-limit runs stay failed. Accessed 2026-09-19.

Do Business or Enterprise n8n plans keep running past the quota?

n8n’s pricing FAQ says Business or Enterprise workflows continue without interruption if you exceed your quota, and overage charges may apply if you do not upgrade. This page does not reprint euro or dollar overage bands. n8n’s Cloud FAQ, accessed 2026-09-19, also says Business is not currently available on Cloud and can only be used if you are self-hosting. Do not treat Cloud Starter/Pro fail-at-cap as the same path.

Does n8n self-host have a platform execution fee?

The free Community edition has no platform execution fee. n8n’s choose-how page says you must provide and manage infrastructure. Ops burden lives on When n8n self-host is worth it. This page does not invent a hosting dollar.

Does this page turn a ceiling into a monthly dollar?

No. This page stays on hold, extra-credit, fail, and upgrade behavior as printed on primary vendor pages, accessed 2026-09-19. It does not invent a monthly dollar, an overage dollar, or annual savings. It publishes no annual savings. Check your Billing / usage dashboard and the vendor pricing page with your own unit count.

Does this guide change the Make vs n8n vs Zapier scores?

No. Totals are not published yet.
