Same job, three meters — tasks vs credits vs executions
Units only — not a rank. Totals are not published yet. Self-hosted is a separate lane. A score is not a monthly bill. This page does not add new scores.

Use
Use this page if…
One small-team job is live or about to ship — a website form lead into a sheet or CRM, a confirmation email, Slack, and a follow-up task — and the three vendor meters do not match in your head. You will count the same five steps as Zapier tasks, Make credits, and n8n executions, then switch 50 / 500 / 5,000 successful runs. Stay in units. Verify before buy.

You still need to pick a product — that is Which automation tool for small teams or Make vs n8n vs Zapier — when to pick each. You want what multiplies the meter (loops, retries, polls) — How to meter automation. You want retries and reconnects, not units. You want a monthly dollar from a /500 score. This page counts one job three ways. It does not rank products.
A use-or-skip check for small-team meter confusion.
- You have one small-team job and need it counted as Zapier tasks, Make credits, and n8n executions.
- You will switch 50 / 500 / 5,000 runs before you treat any number as a bill.

What this page tells you. One 5-step small-team job, built the same way on Zapier, Make, and n8n. This page shows units only — Zapier tasks vs Make credits vs n8n executions — at 50, 500, and 5,000 runs, plus a map-your-job table, dated vendor quotes, and published plan quotas, accessed 2026-09-18. It does not invent a monthly dollar, an overage dollar, or annual savings. This page publishes no annual savings. Verify before buy. It does not add new scores.

This page vs the metering read
Tasks vs credits vs executions is the dictionary: what each word counts, what it does not count, and why 1 is not 1. This page does not reprint that dictionary. It counts one job.
How to meter automation is what to watch — usage, volume, credits — and the shorter two-action check (one trigger, two writes, 100 runs). This page does not reprint that watch list.
How AI steps change the meter is the AI / agent delta — model-tier tasks, token credits, activities, and gateway credits. This page stays on the non-AI 5-step job.
Make vs n8n vs Zapier — when to pick each is the product pick. This page does not reprint that when-to-pick.
Retries and reconnects live on Error handling across Make, n8n, and Zapier. This page stays on one concrete job in units only. Same five steps. Interactive 50 / 500 / 5,000 volume control. It does not invent a monthly dollar.
Unit definitions
Each vendor meters a different thing. Compare the same job in the vendor’s unit first. Do not treat one task as one credit as one execution. Dated quotes below are from primary vendor pages, accessed 2026-09-18.
Task
Zapier
A task is any successful action that runs in Zapier. Only successful actions count toward your task usage.
Triggers, Filter, Paths, and Formatter do not count. Polls never use tasks.
Credit
Make
Every time a module in a scenario performs an action, it consumes credits. For example, when your scenario reads a record from Pipedrive, writes a row into a Google Sheet, or posts a tweet, each counts as one credit.
A read from an app or webhook counts. Router and listed error-handler modules do not. By default, 1 operation equals 1 credit. A trigger check is 1 operation.
Execution
n8n
An execution is a single run of your entire workflow. It doesn’t matter how many steps are in the workflow or how much data it processes. It’s still a single execution.
Paid-plan quota counts production runs. Manual tests, sub-workflow runs, and error-workflow runs do not add a quota execution.
Step inventory
A new website form lead. Same five steps on each tool. No extra filters, paths, routers, or retries in the count below.
- 1. New form submission arrives. The trigger. Typeform, Google Forms, or another website form — not a Zapier Form, which Zapier does not count as a task.
- 2. Write a sheet or CRM row. Create or update the contact in Google Sheets or the CRM the team already uses.
- 3. Send a confirmation email. One outbound mail to the person who submitted the form.
- 4. Post a Slack message. One channel message so someone on the team sees the lead.
- 5. Create a follow-up task. One task in Google Tasks, Asana, or the list the team already opens.

| Step | Zapier | Make | n8n |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. New form submission arrives | 0 tasks | 1 credit | Same execution |
| 2. Write a sheet or CRM row | 1 task | 1 credit | Same execution |
| 3. Send a confirmation email | 1 task | 1 credit | Same execution |
| 4. Post a Slack message | 1 task | 1 credit | Same execution |
| 5. Create a follow-up task | 1 task | 1 credit | Same execution |
| Per successful run | 4 tasks | 5 credits | 1 execution |
| 50 successful runs / month | 200 tasks | 250 credits | 50 executions |
Four successful actions on Zapier. The form trigger does not count. Five module actions on Make — the form-read is a credit. n8n still bills one execution per run. A retry, a Paths branch, or an extra module changes the Zapier or Make count. The volume ladder below keeps the same per-run units. The shorter two-action check on How to meter automation counted two successful actions after the trigger.
Units-only volume ladder
Same 5-step job. Same per-run count: 4 Zapier tasks, 5 Make credits, 1 n8n execution. Switch 50, 500, or 5,000 successful runs. Units only. This is not a monthly dollar and not a rank.
Swipe sideways on a narrow screen.
| Successful runs | Zapier | Make | n8n |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | 200 tasks | 250 credits | 50 executions |
| 500 | 2,000 tasks | 2,500 credits | 500 executions |
| 5,000 | 20,000 tasks | 25,000 credits | 5,000 executions |
50 runs is about two form leads on a workday. 5,000 runs is the same job at a higher volume — still 4 tasks, 5 credits, and 1 execution per success. Do not treat one task as one credit as one execution. Verify before buy.
Map your job
Map your own steps to each vendor’s unit, then multiply by successful runs. This table stays on this page. It is not a new score and not a monthly dollar.
Swipe sideways on a narrow screen.
| Step you have | Zapier | Make | n8n |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trigger / new item / webhook | 0 tasks | 1 credit | Same execution |
| Successful write, send, or post | 1 task | 1 credit | Same execution |
| Filter or Paths | 0 tasks | Count a credit if a module runs. Make’s FAQ only names router and listed error-handler modules as free | Same execution |
| Router | n/a — Zapier uses Paths | 0 credits | Same execution |
| Formatter or Delay | 0 tasks | 1 credit if a module runs | Same execution |
| Error-handler module | 1 task if a handler action succeeds | 0 credits for Rollback, Break, Resume, Commit, Ignore | Error workflow does not add an execution |
| One extra successful action | +1 task | +1 credit | Still 1 execution |
Sources are the dated quotes above. A retry or an extra module changes the Zapier or Make count. n8n still bills one execution per full run. Make’s pricing FAQ names a router and listed error-handler modules as free; add a router and error handling say the same.
Published plan quotas
List prices and included units from primary pricing pages, accessed 2026-09-18. This page does not invent a monthly dollar for the 5-step job, an overage dollar, or annual savings. It does not say one tool is cheaper by a dollar figure. Verify before buy.

FAQ
What is the same job on Zapier, Make, and n8n?
One 5-step small-team job: a new website form submission, write a sheet or CRM row, send a confirmation email, post Slack, and create a follow-up task. Same five steps on each tool. Per successful run that is 4 Zapier tasks, 5 Make credits, and 1 n8n execution. At 50 / 500 / 5,000 runs that is 200 / 2,000 / 20,000 tasks, 250 / 2,500 / 25,000 credits, and 50 / 500 / 5,000 executions. That is unit math, not a score.
How do I map my own steps to units?
Use the map-your-job table. A trigger is 0 Zapier tasks and usually 1 Make credit. Each successful write, send, or post is 1 task and 1 credit. Filter, Paths, and Formatter are 0 Zapier tasks. Make’s pricing FAQ counts a router and listed error-handler modules as 0 credits. n8n still bills one execution for the full run. Then multiply by how often the job succeeds.
Why is Make 250 credits when Zapier is 200 tasks?
A Zapier task is a successful action step. The trigger does not count. A Make credit is usually one module action, and Make’s pricing FAQ counts a read from an app or webhook. The form-read is a Make credit and is not a Zapier task. An n8n execution is still one full workflow run. Do not treat one task as one credit as one execution.
Does this page turn those units into a monthly dollar?
No. This page shows units for the job, dated vendor quotes, and published plan quotas with list prices as printed on the vendor pages, accessed 2026-09-18. It does not invent a monthly dollar for this job, an overage dollar, or annual savings. This page publishes no annual savings. It names no cheaper-by-dollar winner. Verify before buy. What to watch on the meter lives on How to meter automation.
Does this guide change the Make vs n8n vs Zapier scores?
No. Totals are not published yet. This page does not add new scores and is not a second rank.
